Qantas Short-Haul Awards in Australia and New Zealand: Costs and Limits

Sydney to Melbourne costs 9,200 Qantas Points in economy or 19,300 points in business at the limited-inventory level recorded in AwardMath's chart dated August 5, 2025.

These figures came from a published post-change table, but the underlying fee examples were dated January 22, 2025. Our record also renders the charges as dollars without a currency code. Check both the amount and currency during booking.

The figures apply to Sydney to Melbourne on Qantas. They do not establish one price for every flight within Oceania. Longer routes such as Sydney to Perth, international flights to New Zealand, and itineraries with connections can require more points.

Qantas uses distance bands, so the length of the full one-way journey determines the points price.

Qantas generally measures cumulative journey distance rather than pricing each segment independently. A short connection may therefore remain in the same band, while a longer connection can push the trip into the next band. Booking the segments as separate awards can produce a different total because each ticket is then priced on its own.

The 9,200-point economy figure is the short-band result represented by Sydney to Melbourne in our data. An older Frequent Miler guide also describes the cumulative-distance mechanism, but its January 2025 discussion predates Qantas's later award-chart changes. Use it for understanding the mechanism, not for setting today's price.

Qantas Points can book eligible Air New Zealand domestic flights, but our graph does not contain a verified New Zealand award price.

Qantas's Air New Zealand partner page says members can use Qantas Points for Classic Flight Rewards on eligible flights carrying an Air New Zealand flight number. The same page lists Christchurch to Wellington economy from 11,500 points plus NZ$5 one way. The page has no publication date, so treat that as a reported starting point and verify it in Qantas's search before relying on it.

The partnership does not make every Australia to New Zealand flight price like a domestic hop. Qantas operates the Trans-Tasman flight network and connects passengers to eligible Air New Zealand domestic services. A trip from Sydney to Wellington and a domestic trip from Christchurch to Wellington are different award journeys and may use different pricing.

Business costs 10,100 more points and $21 more than economy on the Sydney to Melbourne example.

That premium is based on the stored figures of 19,300 points plus $76 versus 9,200 points plus $55. Whether it is sensible depends on the cash fare difference and how you value 10,100 Qantas Points.

Use this calculation for either cabin:

Value per point = (cash fare minus award cash charge) ÷ points used

Compare like with like, including baggage and fare flexibility. If the economy cash fare is low, paying 9,200 points plus the recorded charge may produce weak value. Business is harder to justify on a short flight unless its cash premium is substantial or you specifically value the added airport and onboard benefits.

Search on Qantas.com and look for the reward designation rather than Points Plus Pay. Third-party award-search tools can help scan dates, but Qantas controls whether the seat is actually bookable. Limited-inventory pricing is not available on every flight, and AwardMath does not show live seats.
