Which Points Transfer to Qantas and Virgin Australia Velocity

Qantas has the stronger direct path from US credit card points, while Velocity has more support from Australian rewards programs.

These paths reflect the AwardMath graph as of August 2026. Participation can depend on the country, card, and specific rewards account. An Australian American Express card does not necessarily have the same partners or ratio as a US-issued card.

Older guides need careful handling. A 2023 guide identified American Express, Capital One, Citi, and Marriott as Qantas sources, and a January 2025 guide reported the same group. We use the August 2026 graph for the relationship itself, but you should still verify the ratio and minimum transfer inside your account.

Qantas is usually the practical choice if your balance sits with American Express, Capital One, or Citi and the flight you want appears on Qantas.com.

Qantas offers two materially different reward types. Classic Flight Rewards use fixed points amounts based on Qantas award tables, but inventory is limited. Classic Plus Flight Rewards fluctuate with normal airfares, so the points price can be much higher when the cash fare is expensive. The label matters more than the fact that both appear in the same search.

Qantas prices Classic Flight Rewards using distance-based tables. Different tables apply to Qantas and selected partners, other partner airlines, Jetstar, and qualifying multi-airline Oneworld itineraries. This is why two trips with similar geography can produce different prices.

Taxes, fees, and carrier charges remain payable. Those cash charges can be substantial on some Qantas and British Airways awards, so compare the complete checkout price rather than the points figure alone.

Qantas says Classic Flight Rewards can be booked as far as 353 days before departure. That is a booking window, not a promise that a seat will be released.

Velocity makes the most sense when you already hold compatible Australian rewards or have found a specific Virgin Australia or partner Reward Seat.

The Australian bank path is not uniform. Some cards transfer rewards manually, while others earn Velocity Points directly or require enrollment in a separate airline option. Check the transfer page attached to your exact card before treating a bank balance as usable Velocity Points.

Marriott Bonvoy provides another path, but hotel-to-airline conversions usually sacrifice flexibility and may deliver less value than using the hotel points for stays. Confirm the displayed conversion terms before moving a large balance.

Velocity also has a reciprocal conversion relationship with Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer. This is a real airline-to-airline conversion, which is unusual, but it is not free value. The conversion rate reduces the usable balance, and a second transfer adds another point of failure. Convert only the amount required for an award you can already see.

Velocity partner access is not the same as alliance-wide access. Virgin Australia is not a member of Oneworld or Star Alliance, so each airline relationship has its own earning and redemption rules.

American, Alaska, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, and other partner currencies are booking alternatives, not transfer sources for Qantas Points.

This distinction prevents a common mistake. You cannot move American AAdvantage miles or British Airways Avios into Qantas Frequent Flyer. You may instead use those miles to book a Qantas-operated flight when Qantas releases the seat to that partner.

Partner pricing and access can differ. A Qantas seat visible to Qantas members may not be available through American or Alaska, and each program applies its own award price, change rules, and cash charges. Search the programs you can fund before transferring anything.

The same rule applies to Virgin branding. Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points do not become Virgin Australia Velocity Points merely because the airlines share the Virgin name.

The Virgin Australia and Air New Zealand partnership does not let you convert Airpoints Dollars into Velocity Points.

Virgin Australia's published Air New Zealand page describes earning Velocity Points on eligible Air New Zealand-operated trans-Tasman flights carrying a Virgin Australia flight number. That is flight earning, not a transfer between loyalty balances. It also does not establish that every Air New Zealand flight can be booked as a Velocity reward.

Codeshares, mileage earning, lounge access, award redemption, and points conversion are separate benefits. Never infer one from another.

Search the award first, compare the full price, and transfer only after the itinerary is bookable.

Use Qantas when a Classic Flight Reward is visible and you can fund it directly from a compatible bank program. Compare the same flight through relevant Oneworld partners because their points prices and surcharges may be lower.

Use Velocity when Virgin Australia or a Velocity partner shows the exact Reward Seat you need and your Australian bank balance can reach it efficiently. Use KrisFlyer as a bridge only when the post-conversion balance covers the award and direct KrisFlyer booking is not better.

Do not transfer for a waitlist, a hoped-for seat release, or a Classic Plus price you have not compared with the cash fare. Transfers are generally irreversible, and award inventory can disappear while a transfer is processing. We verify the transfer math, not live seats.
