How to Fly to Australia and New Zealand With Transferable Points
Find a bookable award before choosing a transfer partner, because premium seats to Australia and New Zealand are scarce. ANA Mileage Club and Air Canada Aeroplan provide the clearest current transfer paths, while Air New Zealand nonstop awards require more flexibility.
We check the math and timestamp it. You confirm the seat at booking. We never show live award availability.

Key takeaways
- Search for seats before transferring points because bank-to-airline transfers are usually irreversible.
- ANA Mileage Club offers the lower published business-class prices, but only Amex and Marriott provide the transfer path cited in our May 2026 source.
- Aeroplan costs more on many long routes, but it accepts points from Amex, Bilt, Capital One, Chase, Marriott, and Rove.
- Do not build a trip around old Virgin Atlantic prices for Air New Zealand until an agent confirms both the seat and current price.
- Qantas points can be useful for flights within Australia after you arrive, even when they are not the best tool for the transpacific flight.
Find the seat before you transfer
The workable order is search, verify, transfer, and book.
Australia and New Zealand have heavy demand and limited premium-cabin award inventory. A low award-chart price means nothing if the airline has not released a seat to partners. This is especially true for Air New Zealand business class, which has historically released little partner space.
Start with an award-search tool such as Seats.aero, then verify the exact flight through the program you intend to use. Search Aeroplan awards on Aeroplan.com. For Star Alliance space that you want to book through ANA, the May 2026 source recommends searching ANA or United while logged out, since a logged-in United member may see extra inventory that partners cannot book.
Do not transfer because a calendar says a date might exist. Confirm the operating airline, flight number, cabin, number of passengers, mileage price, and cash charge. Transfers are generally irreversible, and space can disappear while you move the points.
ANA and Aeroplan are the clearest current transfer paths
Check ANA first for price and Aeroplan first for transfer flexibility.
| Program | Transfer sources cited as of May 2026 | Business-class pricing reported in May 2026 | Why you would use it | Main problem |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ANA Mileage Club | Amex, Marriott | From 65,000 miles one way on ANA in low season; from 72,500 on Star Alliance partners | Lower published pricing and access to ANA, Air New Zealand, United, and other Star Alliance routings | Fewer transfer sources, a difficult website, and carrier-dependent surcharges |
| Air Canada Aeroplan | Amex, Bilt, Capital One, Chase, Marriott, Rove | 55,000 to 115,000 points one way on charted partners, with many North America itineraries reaching the longer distance bands | You can combine several transferable currencies and add a stopover for 5,000 points | Air Canada, United, Emirates, and Etihad awards are dynamically priced without a fixed maximum |
ANA can route you through Japan, parts of East or Southeast Asia, Canada, or directly on Air New Zealand when partner space exists. Its low number comes from a published award structure rather than a promise that every flight will price at 65,000 miles. Season, operating carrier, itinerary, and partner availability determine what you can actually book. The May 2026 source reports no fuel surcharge on Air New Zealand or United through ANA, while other carriers may add more cash.
Aeroplan is usually easier if your points are spread among several banks. Its distance-based structure can also support a useful Asia stopover for 5,000 additional points one way. The tradeoff is price. Many North America to Oceania trips fall into long distance bands, and awards operated by Air Canada or United can move beyond the partner-chart range because Aeroplan prices those airlines dynamically.
Treat Air New Zealand nonstop business class as a seat problem
Air New Zealand can provide the most direct trip to Auckland, but partner business-class seats are too inconsistent to anchor a fixed-date vacation.
Reports from 2022 and 2023 described long stretches with no transpacific business awards, followed by clusters of close-in seats. One 2023 report found availability within roughly one to two months of departure from several North American gateways, but that was an observation from that period, not a published release schedule.
Virgin Atlantic Flying Club was once a particularly cheap way to book these seats. Sources from 2022 and 2023 quoted 62,500 points one way between mainland North America and New Zealand, with phone booking required. That figure is stale and is not verified by our August 2026 graph. Do not transfer based on it. If you find Air New Zealand partner space, call Virgin Atlantic and confirm the current price before moving points, then compare it with ANA and Aeroplan.
This path fits a traveler who can leave on short notice, reposition to another gateway, or reverse the trip and search Auckland to North America. If your dates and departure city are fixed, search connecting options through Asia, Canada, Fiji, or Australia instead of waiting for a nonstop seat that may never appear.
Use Qantas points for shorter flights after arrival
Qantas points can solve the Australia portion of the trip even if another program gets you across the Pacific.
Our graph records the following Qantas Classic Reward examples. These entries are unverified, use a chart dated August 5, 2025, and show cash amounts sourced as of January 22, 2025. Qantas can change the points, taxes, fees, or carrier charges.
| Qantas flight | Cabin | Recorded one-way price | What controls the price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sydney to Melbourne | Economy | 9,200 points plus $55 | Saver-level award space must exist |
| Sydney to Melbourne | Business | 19,300 points plus $76 | Saver-level award space must exist |
| Sydney to Bali | Economy | 23,300 points plus $147 | Saver-level award space must exist |
| Sydney to London | Economy | 63,500 points plus $263 | Long distance plus Qantas cash charges |
| Sydney to London | Business | 166,300 points plus $648 | Long distance, premium cabin, and substantial cash charges |
The Sydney to Melbourne examples show the practical role of Qantas points. You can book the long-haul journey through ANA or Aeroplan, arrive in one Australian city, and use Qantas points for a separate domestic segment. Separate tickets create connection risk, so leave enough time for delays and baggage collection.
The London examples also show why the mileage number cannot be judged alone. Qantas adds meaningful cash charges on some long-haul awards. Compare the complete points-and-cash cost with a paid fare before transferring any points.
Skip the old Aeromexico example unless a fresh search proves it works
Aeromexico is not a sensible planning baseline for Hawaii to Australia based on the data available here.
Our graph contains one dynamic Delta award example from Honolulu to Sydney at around 144,200 Aeromexico points plus $120 one way. It is unverified and dated January 27, 2022. It is not a fixed award price, and a new search could return a different number or no partner seat.
Use it only as a reminder that repositioning to Hawaii can expose another route. Search the flight again, compare the result with Aeroplan and other partner programs, and transfer only after confirming that Aeromexico can book the seat at an acceptable price.
Do not mistake a commercial partnership for award access
An airline partnership does not automatically let you redeem one program's points for the other airline's flights.
Velocity's Air New Zealand page describes earning Velocity Points on eligible trans-Tasman flights operated by Air New Zealand with a Virgin Australia flight number. It does not establish broad Velocity award access to Air New Zealand's long-haul network. Reward-seat bookings also do not earn Velocity Points under the cited terms.
The same caution applies to codeshares. A Qantas flight number on an Air New Zealand domestic flight does not prove that Qantas points can book the underlying seat. Confirm redemption access inside the loyalty program rather than relying on the airlines' commercial relationship.
Choose the path that matches your constraint
Use ANA when points are the constraint, Aeroplan when transfer access or routing is the constraint, and cash when fixed dates leave no reasonable awards.
- You have Amex points and flexible dates: Search ANA and Aeroplan side by side. ANA may require fewer points, while Aeroplan may show an itinerary that ANA cannot assemble online.
- You have Chase, Bilt, or Capital One points: Start with Aeroplan based on the transfer relationships documented in May 2026. Check the final price carefully if Air Canada or United operates the flight.
- You want Air New Zealand business class: Search close to departure and across several gateways. Verify partner access before calling Virgin Atlantic or transferring to ANA or Aeroplan.
- You need several Australian cities: Price the transpacific flight separately, then test Qantas points for domestic segments.
- Your dates are fixed around school holidays or peak summer: Do not assume business-class awards will appear. Compare economy awards and paid fares before accepting a poor dynamic redemption.
Before you move any points
- Every number here carries the date we checked it. That is what we saw that day, not a promise it still holds.
- We do not show live seat availability. Award space moves by the minute, so check it in the program you will book with.
- Before you transfer anything, confirm the flight, cabin, seat count and final cash price with the program issuing the ticket. Transfers between programs are one-way.
