Award Change and Redeposit Fees by Loyalty Program
Some programs let you cancel an award for free, while others charge per traveler or make you buy a flexible award. These policies were reviewed in August 2026, but you should confirm the fee shown during booking before transferring points.
We check the math and timestamp it. You confirm the seat at booking. We never show live award availability.

Key takeaways
- American, United, and Southwest generally let you cancel eligible award tickets without a redeposit fee before departure.
- A free change does not protect the original award price, so you still owe any mileage increase.
- Aeroplan, Emirates, and several other international programs tie fees to the award type you select.
- Most hotel programs do not charge a separate award redeposit fee, but the property's cancellation deadline still applies.
- Cancel before departure because no-show rules are usually more expensive and can forfeit the entire award.
U.S. airline award change and cancellation policies
American, United, and Southwest have the simplest fee posture because eligible awards can generally be canceled without a redeposit charge before departure.
The table reflects published policies reviewed in August 2026. A fee-free cancellation returns the miles, but cash refunds, partner booking fees, Basic Economy restrictions, and no-show penalties can follow different rules.
| Program | Change and redeposit posture | What can still cost you | Where to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| American AAdvantage | Eligible award tickets can generally be changed or canceled without a change or mileage-reinstatement fee. | A replacement flight may require more miles. Basic Economy restrictions and no-show rules can differ. | American optional service fees |
| United MileagePlus | United generally does not charge a change or cancellation fee for award tickets canceled before departure. | You pay any additional miles and taxes. Missing the flight without canceling can trigger separate rules. | United flight changes |
| Delta SkyMiles | Awards originating in the United States or Canada in Main Cabin or higher can generally be changed or canceled without a fee. | Basic Economy awards remain restrictive. Awards originating elsewhere can follow different rules. | Delta flight changes |
| Alaska Atmos Rewards | Most standard awards can be changed or canceled without a change fee. | Saver restrictions apply, and some partner-related booking charges are not refundable. A new itinerary can require more points. | Alaska Saver fare rules |
| Southwest Rapid Rewards | Award tickets can generally be changed or canceled without a fee, with points returned to the account that booked the ticket. | A more expensive replacement flight requires additional points. Cancel before the published deadline. | Southwest changes and cancellations |
| JetBlue TrueBlue | The fee follows the purchased fare type rather than whether you paid with points. Most fares are more flexible than Blue Basic. | Blue Basic can carry change or cancellation charges and tighter restrictions. The points price is recalculated when you change flights. | JetBlue changes and cancellations |
Do not assume that a U.S. airline's paid-ticket policy automatically applies to awards. Open the award's fare rules and cancellation screen before confirming the reservation.
International airline award change and redeposit policies
International programs are more likely to charge per traveler or sell separate award types with different flexibility.
| Program | Change and redeposit posture as of August 2026 | Practical consequence | Where to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air Canada Aeroplan | Fees depend on the reward fare family. Standard and lower-priced awards can carry change or cancellation charges, while the most flexible options reduce or remove them. | Compare the extra points for a flexible award with the possible cancellation fee. Flexibility is purchased when you book. | Aeroplan fees |
| Air France-KLM Flying Blue | Flying Blue lists a €70 fee per traveler for eligible reward-ticket changes or refunds. | A family of four can face €280 in fees, so speculative bookings get expensive. Confirm the displayed rule because local currency and ticket conditions can differ. | Flying Blue reward booking FAQ |
| British Airways Club | Reward changes and cancellations carry a service fee that depends on the market servicing the booking. | On low-tax awards, the cancellation charge may be limited by the cash amount already paid. Check the exact amount shown for your country. | British Airways fees and charges |
| Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer | Singapore's published schedule distinguishes Saver, Advantage, and partner awards. Saver date changes can cost US$25, while redepositing a completely unused Singapore Airlines award is listed at US$75 for Saver and US$50 for Advantage. | A no-show charge can be added to the normal change or redeposit fee, so cancel before departure. | KrisFlyer service fees |
| Emirates Skywards | Flexibility depends on the reward type. Flex Plus awards have more forgiving change and refund terms than Saver awards. | The higher mileage price can function as prepaid cancellation protection. Read the fare conditions before choosing the cheaper award. | Emirates Skywards spend miles |
| Avianca LifeMiles | Changes and mileage redeposits are generally paid services, with the amount depending on the ticket and requested action. | Do not make a speculative transfer based only on the low award price. Confirm the fee through LifeMiles before booking. | LifeMiles help center |
Fees are normally charged per passenger, not per reservation. A US$50 fee on one ticket becomes US$200 for four travelers.
Hotel award cancellation and points redeposit policies
Major hotel programs usually return points without a separate redeposit fee when you cancel before the property's deadline.
| Program | General posture | Main risk | Where to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hilton Honors | Points are generally returned after a qualifying reward-stay cancellation. | Each property sets a cancellation deadline, and late cancellation or a no-show can trigger a charge. | Hilton Honors terms |
| Marriott Bonvoy | Points or an eligible award certificate are generally returned when the reservation is canceled within its rules. | The property's deadline controls. An expired certificate may not regain usable life after cancellation. | Marriott Bonvoy terms |
| World of Hyatt | Points are generally returned after a timely cancellation. | Some properties and special rates have longer deadlines or stricter penalties. | World of Hyatt terms |
| IHG One Rewards | Points are generally redeposited when an award stay is canceled within the reservation's cancellation policy. | Canceling late can produce a cash charge under the hotel's stated terms. | IHG One Rewards terms |
The confirmation page matters more than the program's broad policy. Resort properties, peak dates, and special-event periods can impose deadlines measured in weeks rather than hours.
What a fee-free award change does not cover
A zero-dollar change fee does not preserve the mileage price, partner space, or every cash charge from the original booking.
Most programs reprice the itinerary at the award rate available when you make the change. If your original seat cost 50,000 miles and the replacement now costs 80,000, a free change still requires another 30,000 miles. If the new flight costs less, whether you receive the difference depends on the program and the type of change.
Canceling and rebooking can also release the seat before the replacement is secured. Partner inventory may not return immediately, or at all. Some carrier-imposed surcharges and partner booking fees are nonrefundable even when the miles come back.
A schedule change initiated by the airline is different. The airline may waive normal fees or offer alternate flights, but the options depend on the size of the disruption and the ticketing program. Contact the program that issued the award, not necessarily the airline operating the flight.
How to verify the fee before booking
The safest fee is the one displayed for your exact award, passengers, market, and fare type before payment.
Check these items before transferring points:
- Open the fare rules or cancellation terms on the final booking page.
- Confirm whether the amount applies per traveler, per direction, or per transaction.
- Check the deadline for voluntary cancellation and the separate no-show rule.
- Identify nonrefundable partner booking fees, phone-service fees, and carrier surcharges.
- Save a screenshot of the quoted rules and the booking confirmation.
- Confirm award space before transferring points because transfers are usually irreversible.
Award-search tools can help you locate candidate flights, but they do not override the program's booking screen. AwardMath verifies the fee and mileage math. You must confirm the seat and final terms with the loyalty program.
Before you move any points
- Every number here carries the date we checked it. That is what we saw that day, not a promise it still holds.
- We do not show live seat availability. Award space moves by the minute, so check it in the program you will book with.
- Before you transfer anything, confirm the flight, cabin, seat count and final cash price with the program issuing the ticket. Transfers between programs are one-way.
